August 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The U.S. Embassy in Belarus has demanded<\/a> that Belarusian political prisoners be immediately released as the pro-democracy movement marks the fourth anniversary of the 2020 presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States supports the Belarusian people and its democratic aspirations, the embassy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It recalled that on August 9, 2020, Belarusians protested against electoral fraud. Four years later, there are more than 1,400 political prisoners, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It posted a video on X saying that the 2020 protests clearly demonstrated the solidarity and unity of the Belarusian people, which seeks democratic change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Over the past four years, the regime has continued to suppress the will of the Belarusian people, limiting freedom of speech and peaceful assembly,” the video said. “Despite these obstacles, Belarusians continue to support each other, working together for a democratic future. With the help of the international community, which supports the will of the Belarusian people, Belarusians fight bravely and inspire the whole world.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union (EU) made a similar statement yesterday. “The EU remains united in its support to the brave people of Belarus, the Belarusian democratic movement, and civil society in their quest for a free, democratic, sovereign and independent Belarus as part of a peaceful Europe,” said Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
