Minsk accounted for about half of these expenditures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/19673577\/embed#?secret=lrtJNXEIyX\" data-secret=\"lrtJNXEIyX\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past decade, the number of restaurants and bars has increased by about a third, with cafes and other establishments seeing the largest growth (43 percent and 80 percent, respectively). On the other hand, there has been a 12 percent decrease in the number of canteens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minsk: capital\u2019s growing restaurant scene<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, Minsk is the largest player in the Belarusian foodservice market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2013 and 2023, the number of outlets in the capital city doubled. Restaurants increased by 54 percent, cafes by 85 percent, bars by 51 percent, and other food and beverage outlets by 180 percent. However, the number of canteens fell by 2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minsk now accounts for a third of all restaurants and bars in the country. In August 2023, foodservice industry spending in the capital surpassed 250 million rubles ($76.3 million), outpacing other regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/19673395\/embed#?secret=ePlfzC2ySJ\" data-secret=\"ePlfzC2ySJ\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foreign companies\u2019 market share declines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The foodservice industry is dominated by private companies, which account for 73.8 percent of total sales. State-owned companies make up 16.7 percent, while foreign companies represent just 9.5 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large companies control 48.2 percent of total sales, with small and micro businesses making up 42.7 percent. Medium-sized companies account for 8 percent, while individual entrepreneurs hold a 1.1 percent share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the high proportion of private companies and the limited presence of foreign brands, there is room for further growth in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many global brands, including McDonald\u2019s, exited Belarus following the political unrest that followed the 2020 presidential election and the subsequent Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russia\u2019s <em>Vkusno i Tochka<\/em>, marketed as a replacement for McDonald\u2019s, has not yet entered Belarus, though this is under consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A risky market<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While Belarus remains unsaturated with global brands, it offers potential for foreign companies, provided the political and economic climate improves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the country\u2019s political repression and support for Russia\u2019s invasion make it a risky market for Western companies.
