{"id":11301,"date":"2021-12-12T16:48:56","date_gmt":"2021-12-12T13:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/longreads\/minsk-may-eventually-receive-state-of-the-art-missiles-from-moscow\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"minsk-may-eventually-receive-state-of-the-art-missiles-from-moscow","status":"publish","type":"longreads","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/longreads\/11301\/","title":{"rendered":"Minsk may eventually receive state-of-the-art missiles from Moscow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <span>By Aliaksandr Aliesin<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n <b>Aliaksandr Luka\u0161enka told Russia\u2019s Rossiya Segodnya on November 30 that Belarus needed state-of-the art missile systems such as the S-400 and S-500 to defend itself effectively from missile strikes. <\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p> <b> <\/b><\/p>\n<p>\n\t Russia has provided an S-400 Triumf system to Belarus free of charge to be used at a joint training center for missile system operators. \u201cI would like to ask the president [Vladimir Putin] to leave the system here,\u201d Luka\u0161enka said.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Russia to benefit from beefing up Belarusian air defenses<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t The S-400 Triumf can detect aircraft, ballistic and cruise missiles at a range of up to 600 kilometers and attack targets at a range of up to 400 kilometers.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t S-400 deployment in Belarus would give the Russian military up to 10 additional minutes to ready its air defenses in the vicinity of Smolensk and Moscow for combat, observers say. The S-400 is an anti-access\/area denial (A2\/AD) weapon that may prevent an adversary from building up offensive forces close to the borders of the Union State of Belarus and Russia.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Reward for loyalty<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Russia has sold S-400 missile systems to China and Turkey, and has drawn up a contract with India. Moscow was reluctant to supply Minsk with state-of-the-art weapons until recently because of doubt about its ability to pay, and also because Minsk made overtures to the West for several years before the 2020 presidential election.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Commentators note that NATO build-up in neighboring European Union countries and Luka\u0161enka\u2019s current hostility with the West may prompt Russia to supply S-400 systems to Belarus.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Expensive even at discount<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Minsk hopes for a discount, and could also pay part of the deal with military goods, said Vladislav Shurygin, a Russian military expert.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t For instance, Minsk could build transporter, erector, launcher vehicles for Russian mobile missile systems, said Igor Korotchenko, editor in chief of Russia\u2019s Natsionalnaya Oborona magazine.
