A few other towns\u2014such as Salihorsk, known for its potash fertilizer industry, and Astraviec, home to Belarus\u2019s nuclear power plant\u2014are exceptions, driven by major enterprises. However, these represent isolated pockets of prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most regions, wages are strongly influenced by proximity to the capital. This creates a difficult economic environment for remote areas, which often lack access to opportunities for growth and development.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe title=\"Average nominal wage in 2023\" aria-label=\"Map\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-79hne\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/79hne\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border: none;\" width=\"600\" height=\"638\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Border regions struggling amid tensions with neighbors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Border regions once benefitted from cross-border trade and economic ties, generating additional income for locals. However, international sanctions imposed over the past four years have transformed Belarus into a semi-closed economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A comparison of income statistics in Belarusian border areas and similar regions in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Russia reveals a stark contrast. The Belarusian border regions lag behind in nearly all indicators, with the Po\u0142ack district being the sole exception, slightly outperforming Russia&#8217;s Pskov province in terms of average wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salaries in EU border regions are two to three times higher than those in adjacent Belarusian areas.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe title=\"Average earnings gap with a neighboring region of a foreign country in 2023\" aria-label=\"Map\" id=\"datawrapper-chart-Xyp8y\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Xyp8y\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border: none;\" width=\"600\" height=\"633\" data-external=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>From Soviet success to regional outsider<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Economic disparities are becoming increasingly visible in western Belarus, particularly in areas bordering Lithuania and Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in the Astraviec district of the Hrodna region, the average salary was around \u20ac700 last year\u2014half of the average salary in Lithuania&#8217;s Vilnius district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, Belarusian state propaganda continues to assert that the country\u2019s chosen path is infallible. \u201cCompared to the rest of the world, Belarusians are now living in paradise,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka claimed at an annual harvest festival in Masty a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In reality, labor migration has become more challenging, and most Belarusians can only assess the difference in living standards through indirect means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once an exemplary Soviet republic, Belarus is now a regional outsider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Labor migration driven by repression and war<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The growing income gap is having a profound impact on Belarus\u2019s economy and society. More Belarusians, particularly younger workers, are seeking opportunities abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pay gap, widespread human rights abuses and the looming risk of Belarus&#8217;s direct involvement in the Ukrainian conflict are all driving factors behind the exodus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Border regions are particularly vulnerable to the loss of human capital, as locals are aware of the higher living standards in neighboring countries. If borders were more open, many would see just how far Belarus lags behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Location not delivering economic benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stark wage disparity between Belarus\u2019 border regions and those of its neighbors highlights the persistent flaws in the country\u2019s economic model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus could capitalize on its strategic location at the crossroads of key trade routes.
