He warned that the move might pave the way for the arrival of Russian nuclear weapons to Belarus.

Aliaksandr Lukašenka told French President Emmanuel Macron two days earlier that he would ask Vladimir Putin to return nuclear weapons to Belarus if NATO sited nuclear missiles in Poland and Lithuania.

Moscow ready to supply Belarus with state-of-the-art equipment

Lukašenka said last month that he would discuss with Putin military equipment deliveries to Belarus. He noted that Belarus would like to receive Iskander and S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems. “We agreed with Putin that I will think what advanced equipment we need” to defend Belarus and Russia from possible attacks from the West, he said on February 24.

Putin might have approved equipment supplies to Belarus, possibly at lower prices or on credit. Russia may also deploy its missiles to Belarus under the guise of equipping joint military training centers.

Moscow does not seem to care about payment now that Russia is fighting for control of Ukraine. It is not expecting Minsk to send its small army to Ukraine; it has enough personnel of its own. It wants Belarus to defend Russian troops from hypothetical NATO attacks from the western and northwestern approach routes. It also sees Belarus as a place for possible peace talks.

More missiles, less security

Belarus is waiting for Russia to deliver eight Su-30SM fighter jets under a contract signed a few years ago. Minsk also hopes to receive helicopter gunships, S-400 (SA-21 Growler) anti-aircraft missile systems and Iskander-M short-range hypersonic ballistic missiles with a range of up to 500 kilometers. The Iskander-M can carry nuclear warheads.

The missile technology control regime prohibits member states from exporting missiles with a range of more than 300 kilometers. However, it is not legally binding and some countries are known to violate the rules. Lukašenka also can order missiles for a joint training center, for instance, to bypass export restrictions.

Besides, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine proves that Moscow does not really care about any rules and procedures. Dmitry Medvedev, deputy secretary of the Russian Security Council, made it clear recently that Russia may pull out of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START III).

The deployment of Iskander-M missiles would be a step by Belarus to regain nuclear status. The move may give neighbors jitters but would not make Belarus more secure because its missiles will be in NATO’s crosshairs.

By Aliaksandr Aliesin, BPN If Russia deployed Iskander-M (NATO reporting name SS-26 Stone) missile systems to Belarus, the country would be perceived as a big threat but would be a less secure place.
