\n Aliaksandr Luka\u0161enka portrayed Ukraine as an aggressor and defended Belarus\u2019 role in Russia\u2019s invasion during his meeting with Vladimir Putin on March 11.<\/b>\n<\/p>\n

Incredible claims<\/span> <\/h2>\n

\n\t Luka\u0161enka brought a map to his meeting with Putin to prove Ukraine\u2019s alleged intention to attack Russian troops in Belarus.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cThey started it,\u201d he claimed. \u201cI will show you right now from where they were preparing to attack Belarus. If we had not launched the preventive strike on their positions six hours before the operation \u2013 the four positions I am showing you now, I\u2019ve brought the map \u2013 they would attack our troops, of Belarus and Russia, which were there at exercises.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cThat is why it was not we who started this war. Our conscience is clear,\u201d he claimed. \u201cIt was good that we started it. Biological weapons, the largest nuclear plants . . . They were ready to blow it all up.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Although his claims were absolutely incredible, Putin was quite happy that Luka\u0161enka made an effort to amplify the Kremlin\u2019s narrative that Kyiv is to blame for the hostilities and that the Russian \u201cspecial operation\u201d is an act of humanism.\n<\/p>\n

Luka\u0161enka urges EAEU, CSTO to rally round Russia<\/span> <\/h2>\n

\n\t Luka\u0161enka urged the Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization to rally round Russia. He seems to be frustrated by the lack of support from other members of the two post-Soviet alliances.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cAfter we add these markets, we will forget about the sanctions in a month,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n

Moscow\u2019s support<\/span> <\/h2>\n

\n\t Luka\u0161enka is expecting Moscow to offer generous help to Belarus in the face of Western sanctions.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cConceptually, the heads of state agreed on joint steps, including on energy prices, to support each other in connection with the sanction pressure,\u201d said Natallia Eismant, a spokesperson for Luka\u0161enka.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The remark possibly means that Luka\u0161enka and Putin discussed prices for natural gas and oil.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cThe leaders also reached mutually beneficial agreements in the financial sphere,\u201d Eismant said. Probably, that means that Russia may soon issue a new loan or loans to Minsk.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cI would like to add that, as the president of Belarus said after the talks, Russia has taken most serious and unprecedented steps to support our country\u2019s economy,\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t She noted that officials will meet on Monday to discuss details.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Realistically, Russia\u2019s support is likely to be limited because Moscow has been hit hard by Western sanctions.\n<\/p>\n

Will Luka\u0161enka send troops into Ukraine?<\/span> <\/h2>\n

\n\t Some commentators are wondering whether Putin could have made financial and economic assistance conditional on Belarusian troops\u2019 involvement in Russia\u2019s military campaign in Ukraine.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Russian forces have been making little progress since the start of the invasion and are reported to suffer significant losses. On March 11 Putin approved a plan to deploy volunteer fighters from the Middle East. BBC reported that the Wagner Group was recruiting mercenaries. Russia seems to be short of soldiers.\n<\/p>\n

Putin might be thinking of sending
\nBelarusian troops into the battle. But Luka\u0161enka seems to have serious doubts about
\nhis troops\u2019 morale. He might have convinced Putin that Belarusian forces should
