Lid\u017aija Tara\u015benka, coordinator of the Medical Solidarity Foundation, criticized the Belarusian government\u2019s healthcare policy in an interview with the Viewer.<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Bureaucrats suspicious of private clinics<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t In May, the Belarusian health ministry suspended the licenses of private clinics Lode, Klinika A1 and Nordin over alleged breaches of license terms.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Tara\u015benka denounced the move as an attempt by authorities to reconfigure the market in favor of businesses on which officials have considerable influence. She noted that private health services have always been overregulated, and private clinics have never been allowed to perform even the most common types of surgery procedures, such as appendix and gallbladder removal.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t She noted that the government is reluctant to give up control of cash flows. \u201cExports of health services were considerable in the last few years. Many Russians and Ukrainians came to Belarus for treatment,\u201d Tara\u015benka said, noting that only public clinics were allowed to provide transplantation and cancer surgery services for fees.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t On the other hand, she noted, that private dentists and eye clinics are allowed to provide the full spectrum of services.\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Health professionals flee from persecution<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Hundreds of Belarusian doctors fled Belarus after 2020 post-election protests for fear of reprisals for their political views. Most professionals settled in Ukraine and Poland. Some went to Lithuania, some to Germany and Portugal, said Tara\u015benka, who moved to Ukraine in 2020 (now she lives in Poland).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t \u201cBefore I got a job at a private clinic, I pushed through a complicated bureaucratic system, but the hurdle was surmountable. They have standard terminology and documentation in Ukrainian,\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Some doctors took hard decisions to change profession. \u201cSome health professionals joined the ranks of software developers. I know a surgeon who took training as IT tester. The younger you are, the easier. Some took such a desperate move at over 40,\u201d she said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t She pointed out that doctors may not be able to find jobs in Belarus unless they prove their loyalty to the government. \u201cEvery public outpatient clinic and hospital has a deputy chief physician for ideology, who makes hiring decisions. Obviously, applicants are screened for loyalty [to the government].\u201d\n<\/p>\n<h2> <span>Western companies refuse to supply equipment<\/span> <\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Belarus\u2019 health establishments currently have about 10,000 vacancies, based on data from open sources. That is a huge number for the country with a population of more than nine million and a total requirement of 45,000 doctors, Tara\u015benka said and added that the real number of vacancies may be higher. The doctors\u2019 workload has increased dramatically, she noted.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t She said that budget constraints and the government\u2019s diminished reputation are to blame for shortages of medical equipment at some clinics.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t \u201cIn 2014 the economic situation was better, and hospitals were supplied with medical equipment,\u201d she said and added that Western companies refuse to deal with Belarusian authorities with its evil reputation, let alone equip Belarusian hospitals for free.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alak\u015bej Stry\u017eevi\u010d * Reproduction prohibited The suspension of private clinics, doctors\u2019 relocation abroad and shortages of health professionals are signs of erosion of Belarus\u2019 healthcare.
