\n Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka held a six-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow late on April 5 and in the early hours of April 6. The two leaders failed to clarify who will be in charge of nuclear weapons that Russia seeks to deploy in Belarus. The Belarusian ruler argued that the deployment was in response to Washington storing its nuclear missiles in six countries.<\/span><\/b>\n<\/p>\n

No clarity about nuclear deployment plan<\/h2>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka described the talks as fundamental, noting that he and Putin had discussed more than ten security and defense issues \u201cclosed\u201d to the public.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Translated into a more comprehensible language, it means that Putin talked through with his ally, whom he considers his vassal, how to continue the war of aggression against Ukraine and blackmail the West, including with nuclear weapons. \u0141uka\u0161enka, in his usual fashion, was bargaining in an attempt to benefit as much as possible from his murky business with Russia.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t After the talks, the Belarusian ruler said they had reached agreement on all issues. \u201cOf course, we don\u2019t disclose the theme. But I think, you will hear and see it all soon.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t However, the two leaders failed to clarify who will control the nuclear arsenal to be stored in Belarus.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t In a TV interview, aired on March 25, Vladimir Putin said a special storage facility for tactical nuclear weapons would be completed in Belarus by July 1. “We don’t pass [nuclear weapons to Belarus]. And the USA does not pass them to its allies. Basically, we do everything that it has been doing for decades. It has them in certain allied countries, preparing their carriers and their crews,” the Russian president said.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Six days later, \u0141uka\u0161enka said that he will also be in control of the arsenal.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cThese are our weapons that will contribute to our sovereignty and independence,\u201d he said. \u201cThere will be no uncontrolled weapons or other things in Belarus, and cannot be. Everything there is in Belarus will be managed by us here.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin, said later that journalists should use Putin\u2019s statement as reference.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Media reported that Beijing is concerned about \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s revelations. Putin might have used the face-to-face talks to tell his ally that he should better watch his mouth.\n<\/p>\n

Putin\u2019s personal game<\/h2>\n

\n\t The lack of clarity will be an additional source of concern for the West. What if the mercurial Belarusian dictator strikes with nuclear weapons?\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka casts himself as a nuclear strongman. Easily swayed by conspiracy theories, he fears that NATO plans to attack his county. He hopes that the arsenal would keep the alliance at bay. In addition, he hopes that nuclear status would earn him respect with voters.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t However, it is highly unlikely that the Kremlin will allow him to control the ammunition.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Nuclear blackmail is an element of Putin\u2019s global game against the West, the purpose of his life. The Russian president would not let anyone meddle in his global affairs.\n<\/p>\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka snubs Macron<\/h2>\n

\n\t Commenting on reports that at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on April 6, French President Emmanuel Macron touched on the possible deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, \u0141uka\u0161enka agreed with Macron that no country should deploy nuclear weapons in another country.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t “Therefore, the Americans should withdraw all their nuclear weapons from the five or six countries hosting them. Period. I am a radical in this respect,” he said. He added that nuclear weapons should be “put in one pile over a certain period of time and destroyed.” “Anyone can run off at the mouth, like that comrade of ours [apparently Macron]. So, okay, let’s pile it all up and destroy it. That’s the best option. In the meantime, we do what they do,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said, justifying his decision to host Russian tactical nuclear weapons.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The suggestion that all nuclear weapons should be destroyed reminded me of the old Soviet joke: \u201cThere will be no war, but our struggle for peace will turn everything into rubble.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t It is true that the United States stores nuclear bombs in several European countries. But Russia is the only country that has invaded another country in Europe and threatens to use nuclear weapons. \u0141uka\u0161enka is holding the Belarusians hostage to Russia\u2019s insane policy.\n<\/p>\n
