The recent developments may affect Minsk.<\/span><\/b>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Deeper isolation<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on April 26, by a vote of 122 to five, recognizing Russia\u2019s aggression against Ukraine. It was supported by countries that had abstained from voting on similar documents, including heavyweights like Brazil, China, India and Turkey, as well as Armenia and Kazakhstan, members of the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t In a separate development, the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan held talks in the United States on a possible peace deal. Notably, the two countries did not choose Russia as the host for important meetings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Meanwhile, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the Council of Europe issued a resolution stressing that forced transfers of Ukrainian children and civilians to Russia and its occupied territories amount to war crimes. The statement mentions Belarus as a culprit.\n<\/p>\n<h2>\u0141uka\u0161enka apprehensive?<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Apart from the diplomatic failures, Moscow has been flooded by reports of attacks on Russian infrastructure and facilities, including the May 3 drone attack on the Kremlin. No matter who was behind it, it was a huge embarrassment for Russia and President Vladimir Putin.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The war has come to Russia as it prepares for the much-advertised Ukrainian counteroffensive.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka must be sensing that the clouds are darkening. After Moscow announced mobilization last year, many Russians fled to Belarus to dodge the draft. Now that the Kremlin is struggling, more Russians might be willing to escape.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The war is likely to escalate. After the Crimea bridge explosion, Russia has fired missiles at Ukraine\u2019s civil infrastructure. The Kremlin strike may prompt it to attack residential neighborhoods in Ukrainian cities.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Minsk has not yet commented on the incident. The response from its propaganda machine has not been as hysterical as from the Russian media. \u0141uka\u0161enka might know about the context more than the general public.\n<\/p>\n<h2>Minsk introduces border controls with Russia<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t The only response from Minsk has been the introduction of border controls on the shared border with Russia on May 5. Border officers reportedly check travelers\u2019 passports and inspect vehicles.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Border controls had been lifted in 1995, although Moscow introduced random checks from time to time to fight smuggling.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Now \u0141uka\u0161enka probably wants to see what he can do in the event of a major crisis in Russia to prevent it from spilling over into Belarus.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t He wants to lock himself up in the house and wait for it to pass.
