\n The defense ministers of Belarus and Russia on May 25 in Minsk signed the terms of Russian nuclear weapons storage in Belarus. The signing was just a technicality as Russia\u2019s real plans are still a mystery.<\/span><\/b>\n<\/p>\n

Putin is key player<\/h2>\n

\n\t President Vladimir Putin\u2019s idea to station tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus seems to be nothing but an information and psychological operation.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Putin\u2019s objective is to blackmail Ukraine and the West. Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka, who is widely seen as Putin\u2019s puppet, may be genuinely looking forward to hosting nuclear ammunition, hoping that the West would eventually reckon with him.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka draws on the example of North Korea. Although the country is poor, Washington makes a big fuss about its nuclear program. The Belarusian leader suspects the West of conspiring against him and is looking for an effective deterrent.\n<\/p>\n

Moscow to control arsenal <\/h2>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka failed in his bid to take nuclear weapons under his control. Moscow said it did not want to break the non-proliferation treaty. Putin understands that if \u0141uka\u0161enka has any control he can use the arsenal to blackmail Moscow.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The Belarusian ruler was full of hope two months ago.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cThese are our weapons that will contribute to our sovereignty and independence,\u201d \u0141uka\u0161enka said about possible deployment in March. \u201cThere will be no uncontrolled weapons or other things in Belarus, and cannot be. Everything there is in Belarus will be managed by us here.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Clearly, if Moscow stations nuclear weapons in Belarus, it would protect its ally with greater zeal. \u0141uka\u0161enka would be given additional guarantees.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The downside is that the storage facility might be attacked if Putin strikes.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t If nuclear ammunition were to be used with Belarusian missile systems and aircraft, it would not be used without \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s approval. However, Russian troops and equipment are also present in Belarus.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t In an emergency, the Kremlin can arrange for the delivery of munitions to Russian forces and strike without asking the Belarusian ruler for his approval.\n<\/p>\n

Iskanders can fire nuclear-tipped missiles<\/h2>\n

\n\t Putin may be just bluffing, but some analysts are not so sure about it after he went to war with Ukraine on February 24, 2022.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The Russian leader is said to be living in a parallel realm, what if he flies off the handle? Besides, there is an element of calculation in his insanity \u2013 if a tactical nuclear missile is launched from Belarus, it, not Russia, will be targeted by retaliation strikes.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Some observers are skeptical that Russia can build the storage facility before July 1. This is just a technicality. It might have been built already.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Russia has trained Iskander missile operators and Su-25 pilots to handle and apply nuclear munitions.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Although the majority of Belarusians are opposed to nuclear deployment, the regime routinely uses brutal force to impose its decisions and policies on the nation.\n<\/p>\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s possible worry<\/h2>\n

\n\t Russia\u2019s stalled progress in Ukraine may be a discouraging sign for the Belarusian strongman. Moreover, Ukrainians proved capable of attacking the aggressor on its territory.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka should realize that the war can knock on his door one day. He should not be too enthusiastic about Russia\u2019s nuclear presence on Belarusian soil.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He might be interested in haggling with the West and eventually backing out of the deal. After all, eight years ago he rejected Moscow\u2019s plan to set up a military base in Belarus. But this time Moscow would not let him off its hook.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
