\n Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka enjoys his imaginary status as head of nuclear state. But he acknowledged last week that Russian President Vladimir Putin has a final say on the use of nuclear weapons stationed in Belarus.<\/span><\/b>\n<\/p>\n

Three times as powerful and Hiroshima and Nagasaki<\/h2>\n

\n\t “We have missiles and bombs from Russia,” the Belarusian ruler boasted in an interview broadcast by Rossiya 1 on June 13. “A bomb three times as powerful as Hiroshima and Nagasaki. More than 80,000 died instantly there; 250,000 [dead] from one strike. And this single bomb is three times as powerful. I don\u2019t know, up to million people would die instantly.”\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He stressed that he would not hesitate to launch a nuclear strike in response to aggression.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He also said that he did not plan to go to war with the United States and did not insist, at that point, on the deployment of long-range nuclear missiles to Belarus.\n<\/p>\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka says he initiated deployment<\/h2>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka said that he had actually forced Putin to station nuclear weapons in Belarus: \u201cIt was my demand. Russia has not imposed it on me . . . I asked Putin first. Later, I demanded in a friendly way \u2013 give me those weapons back for a while.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He said that Belarus had already built the storage facility and that nuclear weapons were intended to deter potential aggressors. \u201cI don\u2019t think anyone will want to go to war with a country that has such nuclear weapons.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The Belarusian strongman has repeatedly expressed regret that his country gave up nuclear weapons in the 1990s. \u201cIf we had these weapons now, they would be talking to us like that now,\u201d he said in 2010, blaming his predecessor, Stanisla\u016d \u0160u\u0161kievi\u010d, for striking the nuclear withdrawal deal.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t In June 2022, \u0141uka\u0161enka asked Putin to equip Belarus\u2019 warplanes for \u201ca mirror response\u201d to alleged NATO exercises near Belarus involving planes carrying nuclear bombs.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cHelp us repurpose the aircraft we have (the Su-35, as I see it), which can carry nuclear bombs. I am not saying that you will bring nuclear ammunition there tomorrow, but we should not be joking. We remember year [19] 41, when they lulled us into a false sense of security, saying that everything would be fine and peaceful and no one would attack us, and then we were not ready for it,\u201d he said in a reference to Nazi Germany\u2019s assault on the Soviet Union.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cWe should be ready for everything, even the use of the most serious weapons to defend our Fatherland from Brest to Vladivostok,\u201d he added.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Putin said at the time that six European nations stored a total of 200 tactical nuclear munitions, \u201cmainly atomic bombs\u201d that belong to the United States. He said that NATO allies have \u201cprepared 257 aircraft, not only American ones\u201d to deliver the payload, if necessary.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t \u201cWe can do it but we and you should not, probably, go for a mirror response, there is no need for it,\u201d the Russian president said. \u201cBut I absolutely agree with you that we simply must take care of our ultimate security, security of the Union State, and maybe, of other CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) member states.\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He promised that Russia would upgrade Sukhoi Su-25 ground attack aircraft in service with the Belarusian Armed Forces to carry nuclear payload, train pilots and transfer Iskander-M mobile short-range ballistic and cruise missile systems to Belarus. Moscow has delivered on that promise.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t In the June 13 interview, the Belarusian leader also revealed that he had proposed that Moscow equip Belarusian-made Polonez rocket launchers with nuclear-tipped warheads.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Obviously, Putin skillfully exploits \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s nuclear ambitions to amplify his nuclear threats.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The Belarusian strongman is enjoying his role, hoping that he has become impregnable like North Korea\u2019s Kim Jong Un.\n<\/p>\n

Concern about Kalino\u016dski regiment<\/h2>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s aggressive rhetoric was also directed against Kyiv. He made it clear that he saw the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment, a military unit formed of Belarusian fighters in Ukraine, as a potential aggressor.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t Committee for State Security (KGB) Chairman Ivan Tertel claimed last year that Ukraine-based fighters were looking to go on a rampage, invade Belarus, take the town of Malaryta and go on to attack Minsk.\n<\/p>\n

Approval not a problem<\/h2>\n

\n\t \u0141uka\u0161enka indicated that he would ask Moscow for longer-range nuclear weapons if tension heightens. He claimed that Belarus has the necessary infrastructure left from the Soviet Union.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He admitted that he would need Putin\u2019s approval for a nuclear strike, but made it clear that it would be a mere formality.\n<\/p>\n

\n\t He described the approval process as follows, \u201c[Putin] picks up the phone, wherever he might be, he picks up the phone. He calls, I pick up the phone, at any moment, even right now. Is it a big deal to coordinate some nuclear strike?\u201d\n<\/p>\n

\n\t The Kremlin does not seem to mind \u0141uka\u0161enka claiming to have a say as long as it helps amplify its threats.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
