{"id":11586,"date":"2023-07-06T15:22:53","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T12:22:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/longreads\/belarusian-leaders-threats-primarily-directed-at-poland-analyst-says\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"belarusian-leaders-threats-primarily-directed-at-poland-analyst-says","status":"publish","type":"longreads","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/longreads\/11586\/","title":{"rendered":"Belarusian leader\u2019s threats primarily directed at Poland, analyst says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <span>By Alaksandr K\u0142asko\u016dski,&nbsp;BPN<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n <b><span>Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka told would-be officers on July 5 that the Belarusian military has his enemies&#8217; decision-making centers at its cross-hairs and is ready to strike in response to an act of aggression.<\/span><\/b>\n<\/p>\n<h2>Threats to Poland<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t The Belarusian ruler may use Russian-made Iskander missile systems with a range of up to 500 kilometers to attack neighboring countries, including with nuclear missiles, a Belarusian defense analyst told The Viewer speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Russia handed over a battalion of six to eight launchers to Belarusian troops. In February, the Belarusian defense ministry said that Belarusian crews were operating the systems, while in April crews were trained in Russia to handle nuclear munitions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Conventional missiles also can be used to attack the decision-making centers with a high degree of precision, the source added, noting that the likely targets are military headquarters, airfields, command posts, ammunition depots, as well as oil refineries, defense industry enterprises and US and NATO bases.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The source pointed out that the Iskander is to be used primarily against Poland.\n<\/p>\n<h2>Nuclear threats<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t The Belarusian leader reiterated his threats to use nuclear weapons during the Independence Day grand rally on June 30. He accused Western politicians \u201cof setting Europe\u2019s head into the nuclear guillotine with their own hands.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Three days earlier, he directed that security chiefs should come up with \u201can algorithm\u201d how to use tactical nuclear weapons in response to possible \u201cexternal aggression.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t He pushed back hard against any suggestion that the Kremlin treats him as a puppet and uses him for nuclear blackmail. \u201cThis is our weapon, and we will use it,\u201d he stressed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Belarusian leader repeatedly claimed that he would control the nuclear arsenal to be deployed in Belarus, while Moscow stressed that it would control it alone. It has never asked \u0141uka\u0161enka to retract his claims. The Kremlin seems to use the Belarusian ally to intimidate the West and amplify its nuclear threats.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t In fact, \u0141uka\u0161enka and Putin would have to reach consensus to use nuclear weapons, the source said, noting that both would have a degree of control if nukes are stationed in Belarus.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Nuclear missiles are used with the Iskander missile systems that are now operated by Belarusian troops, while nuclear bombs are to be used with the Su-25 attack planes operated by Belarusian pilots. The missile and aircraft crews will not attack neighboring countries without orders from the Belarusian commander in chief.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t On the other hand, the fuses have code locks with Russia possessing the codes. Therefore, only the Russians can activate the nuclear missiles and bombs, the source said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Russia can hardly launch a nuclear strike without \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s approval because Belarusian troops control Belarusian airfields and access routes, the source added.\n<\/p>\n<h2>Wagner not used as threat against West<\/h2>\n<p>\n\t Although \u0141uka\u0161enka has been issuing nuclear threats almost daily, he has never threatened his enemies an attack involving Wagner mercenaries despite Western politicians\u2019 concern about the paramilitary group\u2019s possible presence in Belarus.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t One can assume that it was the Kremlin\u2019s idea to send Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and his fighters to Belarus. Although \u0141uka\u0161enka boasts of saving Russia, he must realize that Wagner presence in Belarus is a problem.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Belarusian leader would not let any uncontrolled armed groups in Belarus, the source said. \u201cEither they will be under the Belarusian Armed Forces\u2019 control, by signing contracts, or will have a rear base here, from where they will travel to Africa.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t He noted that fears that Belarusian authorities might use Wagner fighters for hybrid attacks on NATO borders are unfounded.
