Despite the numerous challenges of recent years, Belarusians continue to demonstrate their competitiveness in foreign labor markets, contradicting the persistent myths promoted by state propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Belarusian scientists were forced into exile amid political repression in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. They have since found refuge at leading universities and research centers across Europe, the Americas and Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Official statistics fail to capture the extent of the crisis in Belarusian science. While the number of scientists is gradually declining \u2014 seemingly a natural result of the country\u2019s overall population decrease \u2014 the reality is more troubling. Many individuals formally listed at research institutions have not been actively involved in research for years. A significant number of doctoral degree holders are now over 70, and the younger generation is not stepping in to replace them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is more than a loss of personnel \u2014 it is the dismantling of traditions, the collapse of academic continuity and the disintegration of scientific schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/23090674\/embed#?secret=PoB4Ox4uL5\" data-secret=\"PoB4Ox4uL5\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-flourish wp-block-embed-flourish\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Interactive or visual content\" src=\"https:\/\/flo.uri.sh\/visualisation\/23090873\/embed#?secret=QpyWJouJUh\" data-secret=\"QpyWJouJUh\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" height=\"575\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Following in Russia\u2019s footsteps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the political upheaval of 2020 and Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Belarusian science has entered a phase of growing isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many researchers with international connections have been forced to flee due to persecution for their civic stances. Meanwhile, the international scientific community has suspended cooperation \u2014 not only in response to the West\u2019s broader disengagement from aggressor states but also because of Belarusian bureaucratic pressure, which views international collaboration as a potential threat to national interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this context, Belarus is following trends observed in Russia:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Securitization of science<\/strong><br>Research is increasingly framed through the lens of national security, especially when it relates \u2014 even tangentially \u2014 to the military-industrial complex. Independent thinking, essential to scientific progress, is increasingly unwelcome. Scientific autonomy and critical analysis have become liabilities under authoritarian rule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scientific sovereignty<\/strong><br>Borrowed from recent Russian discourse amid sanctions and geopolitical isolation, this concept emphasizes self-sufficiency in research and development: building national research schools, developing domestic technologies and minimizing international cooperation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironically, those who advocate for this isolationist model often have no background in research or education. Their interference only accelerates the degradation of the country\u2019s scientific landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This push toward &#8220;sovereign science&#8221; contradicts the very nature of modern scientific progress, which depends on collaboration and the exchange of ideas. In a globalized world, trying to &#8220;reinvent the wheel&#8221; in isolation is not just inefficient \u2014 it is absurd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, the Belarusian scientific community finds itself trapped between external sanctions and internal repression. Foreign partners have severed ties for moral and ethical reasons, while domestic authorities restrict international cooperation. Together, these forces stifle genuine research and cripple the country\u2019s scientific potential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Science in service of propaganda<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Political isolation and authoritarian rule are transforming science into a tool of propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Government officials tend to support projects that promise quick, flashy results \u2014 even if these initiatives ultimately amount to little more than window dressing. Examples include the much-publicized Belarusian electric vehicle project under the Academy of Sciences, or grandiose plans for a biotech corporation that exist only in press releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Alchemists&#8221; \u2014 figures who claim to have discovered instant solutions to complex problems \u2014 have taken center stage. In reality, they are promoting myths of progress that exist only on paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This system of governance suppresses critical thinking and punishes constructive criticism. Instead of a pursuit of truth, scientific activity is reduced to performance, where loyalty to the regime is valued over tangible results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The consequences are clear: past scientific achievements are fading into irrelevance. Former successes once celebrated by the state are now scarcely mentioned. References to Soviet-era scientific accomplishments \u2014 once held up as evidence of continuity \u2014 ring hollow. Even officials now understand that a scientific school frozen in the 1980s is outdated. To present it as modern is nothing short of charlatanism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Isolation leads to stagnation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern science cannot function without international collaboration. For research schools to thrive, they must be integrated into the global scientific community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, under a political regime that increasingly resembles autarky, Belarusian researchers are finding it ever more difficult to attend international conferences or publish in foreign journals. Access to Western publications has been curtailed, and participation in international projects is nearly impossible without cooperation from countries labeled by Minsk as \u201cunfriendly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This growing isolation deprives researchers of the ability to develop their work and contribute meaningfully to global scientific discourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, Belarus\u2019 spending on research and development remains critically low. For the authorities, science is more of a decorative element \u2014 a way to make superficial claims of progress \u2014 rather than a genuine area of national investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state backs only those projects that align with propaganda goals. Events like <em>Intellectual Belarus<\/em>, which purport to showcase breakthrough innovations, amount to little more than staged exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what\u2019s the point if the showcased products have no market demand \u2014 neither internationally nor domestically? These displays evoke the Soviet-era <em>Exhibitions of National Economic Achievements<\/em>, where the purpose was admiration, not practical use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Political change is essential<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Belarusian science is caught between an authoritarian regime at home and a hostile international environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Efforts to enforce scientific &#8220;sovereignty&#8221; have led only to isolation and decay. Instead of integrating into the global research community, Belarus retreats into seclusion, echoing Russia\u2019s path of building a closed, insular scientific system. The result: stagnation, the marginalization of true scientists and the rise of pseudo-researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With meaningful international cooperation now nearly impossible, talented Belarusian scientists \u2014 those who could compete globally \u2014 are choosing to pursue their careers abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has led to the formation of Belarusian scientific enclaves overseas, which maintain ties to international research but are no longer connected to their homeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Restoring Belarus\u2019s scientific potential will require more than just political reform.
