Typical examples include Moldova, Armenia and several Central Asian states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In these countries, ties between the homeland and citizens living abroad are evident not only in household budgets but also in economic, social and sometimes political life, as recent elections in Armenia and Moldova have particularly clearly demonstrated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, remittances to Belarus have increased considerably since the 2020 crisis, when political repression drove hundreds of thousands of people out of the country. Although they live abroad, their financial ties with Belarus do not necessarily disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly evident among Belarusians living in Poland. In 2025, around 146,000 Belarusians held residence permits in the country, compared with just 16,000 in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are predominantly of working age: around 45 percent of respondents in a study by the National Bank of Poland were under 35, while 62 percent had higher education. Belarusian emigrants in Poland are therefore relatively young and well educated.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/30578092\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/30578092\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The experience of Belarusians in Poland illustrates how the outflow of people has affected the country&#8217;s human capital. Many of those now living abroad could otherwise be running businesses or working in IT, finance, industry and education, paying taxes and generating domestic demand \u2014 helping lay the foundations for a more prosperous Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reasons for leaving vary. In the National Bank of Poland study, for example, respondents cited the political situation and fear of repression as reasons for moving more frequently than economic considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Belarusian economy, however, the outcome is the same: some of the country&#8217;s human capital now generates income for other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, financial ties with Belarus persist. In 2025, around 29 percent of Belarusians surveyed in Poland sent money back home, down from more than a third a year earlier. Transfers were more common among those whose immediate social circles remained in Belarus and those with stable employment in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emigrants do not forget their families<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emigration does not necessarily mean an economic break with one&#8217;s home country. Someone may work in Warsaw, Vilnius or another European capital and pay taxes there while continuing to support a household in Belarus \u2014 helping parents, covering children&#8217;s expenses, maintaining property or simply sending part of their earnings to family members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus received around $148 million through international money transfer systems in 2023, $144 million in 2024 and nearly $160 million in 2025. Outgoing transfers totaled around $106 million in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparing the full year of 2025 with only the first half of 2026 would be misleading. A comparison of the first six months of each year, however, shows that incoming transfers continued to grow in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/30578152\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/30578152\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first half of 2026, Belarus received $82.5 million through these systems, approximately 7 percent more than in the same period last year. Outgoing transfers totaled $60.2 million, almost 24 percent above the level recorded in January\u2013June 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The average transaction size also increased significantly. The average incoming transfer rose from $524 to $593, while the average outgoing transfer grew from $629 to $800.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the increase in the total value of transfers, their number appears to have declined slightly, judging by the ratio of the overall volume to the average transaction size. In other words, more money is moving through this channel not because there are more transfers, but primarily because individual transfers are getting larger.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/30578189\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/30578189\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures also help explain the changing financial landscape of Belarus&#8217; domestic foreign exchange market, where households are selling more foreign currency than they buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be wrong, however, to identify remittances from abroad as the main driver of net currency sales. Households also draw on their savings and receive salaries from foreign employers. Nevertheless, as more Belarusians live and work outside the country, funds arriving from abroad \u2014 through remittances and other channels \u2014 are becoming an increasingly important part of the picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new model is taking shape<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Remittances reflect the emergence of a new model in which part of Belarus&#8217;s population lives outside the country but remains economically connected to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an interesting contradiction here. Those who stayed and those who left may inhabit different information and value systems and have very different perceptions of developments inside and outside Belarus. Yet material ties persist at the household level through remittances, cross-border spending and financial support for relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As publicly available statistics become increasingly limited, such indirect indicators are particularly valuable. Even the relatively narrow dataset published by the National Bank of Belarus on international money transfers reveals more about the country today than might appear at first glance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although these figures do not capture the full scale of money flowing into Belarus from abroad, they clearly indicate the direction of change.
