The evacuation of Belarusians and their families from the Gaza Strip was accompanied by a pompous propaganda campaign, intended to demonstrate the government’s concern for its compatriots and cast Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in a favorable light.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The campaign proved once again that Minsk supports the Palestinians in the Middle East conflict but seeks to avoid an open breach with Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Propaganda trumpets<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The arrival in Minsk of a Gaza refugee evacuation flight from Cairo was presented by the state media as the top news of mid-November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pro-government journalists touted the flight as a success for Belarusian diplomats, a personal achievement of \u0141uka\u0161enka, and a generous gift from the Belarusian leadership to its compatriots rather than a natural step by a responsible state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evacuation took long and is still shrouded in mystery. Minsk claimed to have held consultations with Israel and Egypt, and to have received assistance from Russia and Qatar, but stopped short of disclosing any details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is still uncertainty over the number of refugees who arrived from Cairo. The national airline Belavia said there were 43 passengers, but blogger Anton Matolka, after analyzing photos and videos, concluded that there were actually no more than 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state media emphasized that Committee for State Security (KGB) agents were involved in the risky mission carried out on \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trying to improve ruler’s image<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka has always cast himself as an experienced and internationally recognized politician who manages to solve seemingly unsolvable tasks in an extraordinary way and with his titanic efforts. The state media presented the evacuation as an example of such an effort, without mentioning that other countries also evacuated their nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State propaganda used the flight to promote the Belarusian ruler as the head of a humane and caring regime that never leaves its people in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In particular, articles and television reports cited refugees as they recounted the horrors they had experienced and thanked \u0141uka\u0161enka personally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two flights receive different coverage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In contrast to the most recent flight from Cairo, an evacuation flight from Israel in early November was hardly noticed by the state media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports did not mention its commercial nature and were quite neutral towards Belarusians arriving from Israel. State journalists did not call the arriving passengers as “our” people as they described the passengers of the other flight from Cairo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As far the Gaze War is concerned, \u0141uka\u0161enka has not yet expressed his condolences to those who died and suffered at the hands of Hamas in Israel, among whom were Belarusian nationals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Belarusian state propaganda, imitating its Russian counterparts, has adopted a pro-Palestinian stance since the beginning of the war, with some journalists even engaging in anti-Semitic rhetoric, officials in Minsk avoid commenting on the sensitive issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state media coverage of evacuation from Gaza, however, shows that Minsk’s sympathies lie with Palestine, while its reluctance to criticize Israel is merely pragmatic and driven by its desire not to anger Jerusalem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second month of the Gaza War, \u0141uka\u0161enka continues to adhere to the same tactic as he employed in October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The propaganda, following the Kremlin\u2019s lead, promotes anti-Semitic narratives. Officials remain silent, but their sympathies lie with Palestinians, and their reticence exposes their fear of an open breach with Israel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
