Belarusian propaganda points the finger of blame at Washington, describing it as the main beneficiary of the Israeli-Palestinian war. In fact, the conflict benefits Minsk, giving it an opportunity to promote Belarus as an island of peace and cast Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka as a peacemaker.<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Propaganda will stoke these narratives in the run-up to the 2024 parliamentary and local elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka has not yet commented on the war in Israel. On October 10, while receiving the governor of the Novosibirsk region, he said that “Siberia is a special region for Belarusians, where many of our compatriots live. They have been attached to this land with their hearts and minds since the times of Catherine and the tsarist reforms of Stolypin.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same can be said about Israel. Belarusians were among the founders of the Israeli state and played key roles in its politics. Many Jews from Belarus live there today. However, \u0141uka\u0161enka pretends as if nothing is happening there. On the other hand, he did not forget to send his greetings to the president of Uganda on Independence Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka, an anti-Western autocrat, crushes his opposition with an iron fist and maintains close ties with Arab regimes and Iran. He cannot speak out in support of Israel because US President Joe Biden, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, and opposition leader Zviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja have backed it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Public support for Hamas is not a good option for the Belarusian ruler either. It would be too much, even by his standards. Minsk does not want to spoil its relations with Israel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most likely, Minsk will take a neutral position and call for an end to bloodshed and negotiations. However, \u0141uka\u0161enka is also capable of impulsive improvisation, sometimes speaking out when it would be better for him to remain silent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka’s propaganda rejoicing, blaming USA <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin on October 10 linked the Middle East crisis to the US policy in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moscow and Minsk say the United States benefits from fomenting conflicts around the world and pits Arabs against Jews. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In general, Belarusian state-controlled media outlets have paid little attention to the war in Israel after Minskaja Pra\u016dda took down a story that cast Hamas in a favorable light. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some government-controlled media criticized Israel, claiming that it was not fully prepared for a terrorist attack. BelTA<\/em> quoted Russian defense analyst Igor Korotchenko as saying that Hamas was successfully using new tools, such as drones. The agency did not ask the analyst to comment on allegations that Hamas militants shoot civilians and take hostages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another common narrative is that the war will make things worse for Ukraine. Aleh Hajdukievi\u010d, a member of the House of Representatives, said that financial and military aid to Kyiv will decrease significantly, but noted that Washington is not interested in stopping the war against Russia. “If necessary, they [Ukrainians] will be sent to die without weapons, with shovels and pitchforks,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, the mouthpiece of Belarusian propaganda, sb.by, criticized the Polish president\u2019s \u201ccautious\u201d stance on the crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peaceful aggressors <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moscow and Iran are looking to benefit from the war in Israel. “We kiss the hands of those who planned an attack on the Zionist regime,” said Iran\u2019s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Kremlin is playing a more cunning game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin, said that Moscow maintains contacts with both sides and “has the potential to participate in the settlement processes.” This is an opportunity for the aggressor state to try on the peacemaking toga. Minsk is also likely to pounce on the opportunity to show off its peaceful intentions and try to repair its reputation as the co-aggressor. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pro-Kremlin and Belarusian state-controlled media hope that the collective West will cut its support to Ukraine because of the new war. \u0141uka\u0161enka has repeatedly appealed to Zelensky to make peace with the Kremlin on Moscow’s terms. He may soon reiterate his appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Island of peace and stability <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In general, the more difficult it will be for Ukraine in the war against Moscow, the better for the Belarusian ruler. After all, \u0141uka\u0161enka has staked everything on his alliance with the Kremlin, which is the main support pillar of his regime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is likely to draw contrast between peace in Belarus and the conflicts in Ukraine, Nagorno-Karabakh and Israel. The \u0141uka\u0161enka government may try to capitalize on that message during the 2024 elections for local soviets (councils) and the House of Representatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opponents say that \u0141uka\u0161enka is likely to resort to violence and election fraud again, but he will always be interested in broadening his appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
