Grounds for resignation unclear<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent weeks, \u0141uka\u0161enka has played up threats from NATO and boasted of Minsk’s defense capabilities.

In this context, the dismissal of Viktar Hulevi\u010d, 55, came as a surprise. The general could have served five or ten years longer.\u00a0

Appointed in March 2021, Hulevi\u010d was in charge of the General Staff when Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine from Belarus.

The general looks fit, and his recent foreign trips, including the Cuba visit in March, and media presence did not indicate that he fell out with his boss.

Hulevi\u010d did not comment on his dismissal, while \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s press office issued a brief official statement.

Interestingly, the sacking came immediately after the Belarusian leader’s return from Moscow, in the midst of a Russian offensive in Ukraine\u2019s Kharkov region.

Contrary to his own warnings about the crucial historical moment that Belarus was experiencing, \u0141uka\u0161enka left the General Staff without the commanding officer: Hulevi\u010d’s successor was never introduced, and it is still unclear who deputizes for him.

All these circumstances suggest that Hulevi\u010d’s resignation was not planned in advance.\u00a0

Although it is hard to suspect the general of disloyalty, Na\u0161a Niva <\/em>reported in 2023, citing its sources, that in February 2022 Hulevi\u010d opposed Belarus’ entry into the war on the side of Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belousov to push for Belarus\u2019 greater involvement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andrei Belousov\u2019s appointment as Russia’s defense minister has given rise to speculation that the Kremlin prepares for a long war in Ukraine.

Belousov, an economist, is seen as a harbinger of Russia\u2019s militarization. The minister’s task is to build an effective army to enable Russia\u2019s expansion.

Belousov may seek to subordinate Belarus\u2019 industry and other resources to Russian military goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
