Belarus, US side with Russia in UN resolution on Ukraine

February 25, Pozirk. Belarus twice sided with Russia in votes on two resolutions tabled by Ukraine and the United States at the United Nations on the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Kyiv’s resolution described Russia as an aggressor and demanded an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. It called for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on the UN Charter.
Washington’s resolution contained no criticism of Russia due to US President Donald Trump’s desire to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It calls for peace between Russia and Ukraine without specifying which country started the war or on what terms a ceasefire should be achieved.
The UN General Assembly adopted both documents: the US resolution received 93 votes in favor, eight against and 73 abstentions. Ukraine’s also received 93 votes in favor and 18 votes against. The United States voted against the latter, along with Russia, Russia, Belarus and North Korea.
Belarus, which supports the Russian war in Ukraine, always sides with Russia when voting at the UN.
