May 14, Pozirk. Luxembourg has earmarked €250,000 for the International Humanitarian Fund that covers expenses for treatment and rehabilitation of people who suffered from political reprisals in Belarus, opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja said on Telegram.
The announcement came after her meeting yesterday with Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel.
“The contribution to the International Humanitarian Fund will support the rehabilitation of those who have gone through prisons, torture and persecution,” she said, calling on Luxembourg to help secure the release of Belarusian political prisoners via international mediation.
The politician came up with the fund’s idea after jailed Belarusian human rights champion Aleś Bialacki was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. She announced its launch last April, rallying the support of Norway and Sweden.
Today, Cichanoŭskaja is expected to participate in the 134th annual meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CoE), where she will expose the role of Alaksandar Łukašenka and his officials in Russia’s war on Ukraine, her press office reported.
The meeting may formalize a special tribunal on aggression against Ukraine, after a coalition of 35 CoE members announced the completion of preparations a few days ago.
