Poland marks one week without irregular border crossings from Belarus

December 10, Pozirk. Poland did not record any attempts by third-country nationals to cross the border irregularly via Belarus from December 2 to 8, according to Pozirk‘s analysis of border guards’ data.
A similar period with no attempts was recorded almost two years ago, in late January-early February 2024.
Since the start of December, the neighboring European Union countries thwarted 45 irregular crossings, with 42 blocked by Latvia and three by Poland. Lithuania has not recorded any attempts since November 29.
Belarus’ western neighbors have reported 42,328 irregular entries since the start of 2025, 18 percent more than in the same period in 2024. Poland remained the primary target of irregular migration with 28,838 attempts this year, followed by Latvia with 11,883 attempts and Lithuania with 1,607 attempts.
The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar Łukašenka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.
In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.
Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a “hybrid attack” orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.
