Belarus records lowest temperatures in eight years
February 2, Pozirk. Air temperatures in Belarus dropped to below 30 degrees Celsius for the first time in eight years, falling to minus 31.1C in the Luniniec district and -30.2C in Žytkavičy on the night between February 1 and 2, according to Pozirk’s analysis of the Biełhidramiet’s data.
Five locations posted low-temperature records, with the previous lows all set in 2012. In particular, the mercury dropped to -31.1C in the Luniniec district (-27.8C in 2012), -28.9C in Hancavičy (-27.4C), -27.8C in Ašmiany (-27.7C), -26.9C in Stoŭbcy (-25.1C), and -24.2C in Vysokaye (-23.8C).
The previous drop below -30C occurred in Kličau on February 27, 2018 (-30.4C).
Colder temperatures have not been seen in Belarus since January 2017, when the mercury plunged to -34.4C in Jeziaryšča.
Uncharacteristically, temperatures have been the lowest in central Belarus, including -28.5C in Minsk, and the northwest.
The cold temperature record for the night, -33.4C, was set in Hrodna in 1970.
