May 12, Pozirk. The Council of Europe (CE) has opened an information point for Belarusians in Vilnius on May 12.
The ceremony at Lithuania’s National Library was attended by CE Secretary General Alain Berset, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys and Belarus’ opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja.
The CE information point operated at Belarusian State University in Minsk from 2009 to 2015.
Belarus is not a member of the CE, mainly because its government refuses to abolish the death penalty, but its pro-democracy opposition has declared CE membership among its priorities.
