Opposition’s envoy, EU diplomats discuss Russia’s nuclear deployment

June 23, BPN. The Belarusian democratic forces’ envoy to Brussels and European diplomats sitting on the Political and Security Committee (PSC) have discussed Russia’s announced deployment of nuclear weapons to Belarus.

Uładzimir Astapienka, an ally of Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja, “stressed the need for special efforts to protect the sovereignty and independence of Belarus,” Cichanoŭskaja’s cabinet said.

The breakfast meeting was initiated by the Polish Permanent Representation to the European Union.

The guests discussed support for Belarusian civil society, ways to overcome the political crisis in Belarus, and threats connected to Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Astapienka said Belarus became hostage to Alaksandr Łukašenka’s service as Russia’s vassal.

He called on the European ambassadors to cooperate with Cichanoŭskaja’s cabinet and the Coordination Council, an opposition alliance.
