Ukrainian diplomat praises Belarusian volunteer fighters

February 8, Pozirk. Ukraine’s envoy Ihor Kyzym met with Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment fighters to discuss Kyiv’s plan to work out a coherent strategy for building relations with the Belarusian opposition.

“I consider you heroes and treat the Belarusian volunteers with great respect,” the regiment’s press office quoted the diplomat as saying.

Acting as an opposition center in Kyiv, along with the other two in Vilnius and Warsaw, the regiment may play an important role in the democratization of Belarus, its press office noted.

“Political problems are easier to solve when one can rely on military support,” it added.

The meeting participants expressed concern about Russia’s attempts to absorb Belarus.

Kyzym announced his appointment as ambassador-at-large for Belarusian affairs on February 3.

He had served as ambassador to Belarus from February 2017 to June 2023. The diplomat remained in Minsk during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, criticizing Minsk’s support for the Russians.

In April 2023, Kyiv recalled him “for consultations” after Alaksandar Łukašenka met with Denis Pushilin, head of Ukraine’s breakaway region of Donetsk.
