EU needs high tariffs on agricultural products from Belarus, Russia – Lithuania

May 4, Pozirk. The European Commission is examining which Russian and Belarusian agricultural products could be subject to exceptionally high tariffs, which would limit their flow to Europe, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda told reporters yesterday.
On April 18, the European Council approved tariffs on the import of grains, oilseeds and their derivatives into the EU from Russia and Belarus, including wheat, corn and sunflower meal. The body called on the EU Council and the European Commission to continue working on the introduction of additional tariffs.
The Delfi news portal quoted Nausėda as saying that very high tariffs on agricultural products from Belarus and Russia were under discussion.
Nausėda added that the European Commission should find the right measures and define the range of targeted products.
“Of course, we can ban the import of Russian and Belarusian agricultural products. But being in the European Council, I understand perfectly well that if we ban them in some countries, they could enter the EU market through other countries,” he said.
