Some 65,000 arrested in post-election reprisals – Viasna

August 9, Pozirk. Belarusian authorities have arrested about 65,000 people for political reasons in the four years since the August 2020 presidential election, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.
The number of immediate political prisoners has increased by more than 5,400 percent to 1,385 on August 9, 2024.
At least 268 political prisoners are at risk, including 19 with disabilities, 103 with serious health conditions, 63 over the age of 60 and 10 with mental disorders.
A total of 1,140 political prisoners have served their sentences in full.
At least 6,971 people were charged with crimes.
Six political prisoners died behind bars: Alaksandar Kulinič, Ihar Lednik, Vadzim Chraśko, Aleś Puškin, Mikałaj Klimovič and Vitold Ašurak. At least five were killed during protests or arrest.
