Lithuania moves to deport Belarusian activist’s husband – NGO

March 25, Pozirk. The Lithuanian migration department has initiated the deportation of Belarusian journalist Aleh Barščeŭski, whose wife Volha Karač is a human rights defender, the Naš Dom non-governmental organization said on its website.

It is said that in Belarus, Barščeŭski could be sentenced to seven years in prison for editing the Naš Dom website, deemed to be extremist same as the NGO.

Lithuania subjected Karač and her family to “political reprisals” for defending Belarusians’ human rights, the organization said.

Vilnius denied Barščeŭski political asylum arguing that he will not be in danger in his home country, it reported.

Naš Dom said its other members received Lithuanian asylum “without any problem.”

In August, BNS reported that Lithuania had turned down a request for political asylum from the wife, accusing her of links with Russian intelligence services.

Karač, whom the Belarusian secret service accused of terrorism in 2021, denied cooperating with any “hostile agencies” in Minsk or Moscow.
