Poland moves to install electronic barrier on border river

September 14, Pozirk. Engineers in the Lublin Voivodeship are installing an electronic barrier on the Bug, the Polish Border Guard reported.
The barrier is expected to enable the detection of border crime, in particular illegal migration and smuggling. It would leave no blind spots on the river separating the area from Belarus.
The 172-km long barrier would include about 1,800 CCTV cameras, and about 4,500 cameras with the day/night function, thermal imaging cameras and detection sensors. Workers will lay hundreds of kilometers of power and control cables and install about 10 telecom containers.
The system will be completed in the next 12 months and integrated with the existing observation towers and the Border Guard’s ICT network.
Investment amounts to about 280 million zlotys ($69 million), co-founded by the European Union (EU).
Polish officers have stopped more than 25,000 attempts by illegal migrants to enter the EU from Belarus since the beginning of 2024, according to official statistics.
In June 2023, Poland completed the construction of a 206-km wall at the border with its eastern neighbor.
