Opposition leader expresses solidarity with jailed mothers

October 14, Pozirk. May “all the families broken by the regime’s cruelty” be reunited soon, Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has said on Mother’s Day, celebrated on October 14 in Belarus.

The politician expressed support to jailed regime critic Palina Šarenda-Panasiuk who is scheduled to go on a new trial today and many other “courageous mothers” like her who are “still held as political prisoners.” “Let us not forget them,” she said on X.

Šarenda-Panasiuk remains in a poor physical and mental state as she keeps facing pressure and “torture-like” detention conditions, her husband Andrej Šarenda said earlier.

Three years ago, the activist was given two years in prison after the judge found her guilty of violence against a police officer and insulting officials. She subsequently received two additional one-year terms for allegedly disobeying the prison administration.

This spring, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women called on Belarus to urgently protect Šarenda-Panasiuk.
