Belarus’ top diplomat visiting Myanmar as Minsk seeks closer ties

January 9, Pozirk. Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ryžankoŭ arrived in Myanmar yesterday evening, days after Alaksandar Łukašenka expressed his desire to expand ties with this country.
Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein, Myanmar’s diplomats and several other officials met him at the airport, myanmar.gov.mm reported.
Last week, the Belarusian ruler reiterated his invitation to Myanmar’s military ruler Min Aung Hlaing to visit Belarus, noting “significant potential” of cooperation. Belarus and Myanmar have a solid foundation for deepening mutually beneficial ties in various areas, he said earlier.
Belarus and Myanmar established diplomatic ties in 1999.
Bilateral trade amounted to $8.2 million in 2021, with Belarusian exports at $5.3 million, according to the Belarusian foreign ministry. Authorities have not disclosed more recent data.
The military seized power in Myanmar after a coup in early 2021, followed by civil war.
