Exiled economist Danejka given 12 years in prison

February 3, Pozirk. The Minsk City Court sentenced economist Pavieł Danejka, of the BEROC think tank, to 12 years in a high-security prison on January 31 without him being present, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.
The judge also imposed a fine of 546,000 rubels (about $160,600). Belarusian authorities persecuted Danejka on charges of unlicensed business activities, conspiracy to seize power and association with an extremist group.
Danejka is a former MP (1995-1996) and former head of the IPM Business School closed down by the Minsk authorities in 2021.
In 2020, he was reportedly summoned to the Investigative Committee for questioning over his membership in the opposition Coordination Council. The case against him was opened four years later and stems from his membership in the Coordination Council.
