Cichanoŭskaja, Aleksijevič discuss political prisoners and support for Ukraine

March 2, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja and Nobel Prize-winning writer Śviatłana Aleksijevič discussed the fate of political prisoners and the importance of advocating for their release at a meeting in Vilnius, the politician’s Telegram channel reported on Saturday.
It said the negotiators exchanged their thoughts on the role of women’s leadership in the Belarusian society and politics and talked about solidarity. The key task now is “to look for inspiring things and maintain unity and faith in the future, despite all the trials,” the meeting concluded.
Cichanoŭskaja and Aleksijevič also discussed why Ukraine’s victory in Russia’s war against Ukraine would be significant for Belarus and how to support Ukrainians in their struggle.
The politician awarded the writer the Renaissance Cross, which the opposition United Transitional Cabinet gives for loyalty to the Belarusian interests and significant contributions to the Belarusian culture.
On Friday, Aleksijevič met with readers at the Castle shelter, run in Lithuania by the Belarusian organization Dapamoha. The Castle reportedly gives refugees sanctuary, medical care, food, clothing, and modest financial assistance.
