IMF improves forecast for Belarus but slashes global growth

April 23, Pozirk. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised its forecast for Belarus’ economic growth in 2025, predicting a 2.8 percent increase in gross domestic product (GDP) this year and 2 percent in 2026.
Inflation is expected at 5.5 percent in 2025 and 5.8 percent in 2026, says the IMF April report.
The Belarusian government projects GDP growth of 4.1 percent for 2025, expecting inflation below 5 percent.
The IMF slashed global growth forecast over US tariff impact. The report states that an increase of tariffs and uncertainty will cause a “significant slowdown,” predicting the US economy will grow 1.8% this year, down from its previous estimate of 2.7%.
The IMF also said there is a 40% chance of a recession in the US.
It is not the only country affected. The IMF slashed growth expectations for Canada, Japan, the UK, Germany, France and Italy.
The IMF forecast a 3.6-percent growth for Belarus in 2024, but the economy expanded by 4 percent, according to the Belarusian Statistics Committee, outpacing both the IMF forecast and the government’s target of 3.8 percent.
