Germany: nitrogen fertilizer imports from Belarus surge

May 29, Pozirk. Germany has imported €1.3 million worth of nitrogen fertilizers from Belarus since the beginning of 2025, Deutsche Welle reported, citing the German agriculture ministry.
Since the start of the year, Germany has imported 3,168.9 t of nitrogen fertilizers for a total of €1.3 million. In 2024, the imports amounted to 3,275.1 t worth €1.3 million. The volume grew from 26.4 t worth €19,000 in 2022 and 2,533.6 t worth €2,533.6 in 2023.
In this way, the deliveries of nitrogen fertilizers from Belarus to Germany have risen by a factor of 120 since 2022. In 2025, Belarus’ share in Germany’s nitrogen fertilizer imports stands at 0.3 percent.
The volume of potash deliveries from Belarus to Germany has been null since 2022 due to the European Union’s sectoral sanctions.
A week ago, members of the European Parliament (EP) approved increased tariffs on fertilizers and some agricultural products from Belarus and Russia.
The legislation provides for a 6.5-percent tariff on fertilizers imported from Russia and Belarus, plus duties of between €40 and €45 per ton for the 2025–2026 period. These tariffs will rise to €430 per ton by 2028. “Income from the sale of Russian and Belarussian fertilizers is considered to be contributing directly to the war against Ukraine,” the EP said.
On October 7, 2024, Wieści Rolnicze reported that Belarus ranked as the third-largest supplier of nitrogen fertilizers to Poland after Russia and Germany and ahead of Lithuania, Algeria, Hungary and the Netherlands.
