Cichanoŭskaja meets with Swedish MPs, foreign minister

June 16, Pozirk. Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has called on lawmakers in Sweden to sign a memorandum of cooperation with the Belarusian pro-democracy forces, she said on her Telegram account.
A memorandum like the ones concluded with Polish and EU lawmakers would signal to people in Belarus that Stockholm does not recognize Alaksandar Łukašenka, Cichanoŭskaja said.
She also urged the MPs to promote broader cooperation between the Nordic Council and Belarusian activists.
Besides, she advocated stronger support for Belarusians in Sweden, who continue to face red tape. This support would make a key impact, “for if we solve the problem here, this would have great importance for other countries,” she said.
Together with Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard, Cichanoŭskaja attended a rally in support of Ukraine. The Belarusian made a speech calling for unity in the face of authoritarianism.
She said Belarus and Ukraine are the first defense line for Europe, so supporting a democratic Belarus is a security investment.
Earlier, Cichanoŭskaja’s aide told Pozirk that she is visiting Sweden and two other European countries this week.
On June 18, Cichanoŭskaja will travel to Brussels to take part in a debate on Belarus’ democratic future at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). The Belarusian pro-democracy forces will sign a memorandum of understanding with the EESC.
On June 19–20, the politician will visit Spain to meet with Francina Armengol, president of the Congress of Deputies, and José Manuel Albares, the foreign minister. Besides, she will have a conversation with Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González.
