Belarus’ PM vows to deepen economic, security ties with eastern Libya

July 1, Pozirk. Belarus is ready for comprehensive cooperation with Libya, Prime Minister Alaksandar Turčyn has told his Libyan counterpart Osama Hammad, from the Government of National Stability that controls eastern Libya, at their meeting in Minsk.
The official identified agriculture, food security, industry, healthcare and education, along with security and law enforcement, disaster prevention and emergency response as promising areas.
The Libyan delegation arrived in Minsk yesterday, a month after Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Viktar Karankievič’s trip to Benghazi.
In February 2025, the supreme commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Khalifa Haftar, visited Minsk.
Libya found itself divided after Muammar Gaddafi was toppled in 2011. The country is actually governed by rival centers of power.
The United Nations and the international community recognize the Government of National Unity (GNU) headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, which controls about a third of Libya—the capital Tripoli and the adjacent territories in the country’s west.
About two-thirds of the country are controlled by the Benghazi-based eastern government of Osama Hammad, the Tobruk-based House of Representatives that appointed him and Haftar-led LNA, which supports them. Besides Belarus, the center of power in eastern Libya is backed by Russia, Egypt and the UAE, among others.
Although the GNU has more weight in the international arena, the eastern government has more influence domestically thanks to its control over resources and the military.
