Belarus, Russia approve concept of next year’s joint exercise
October 22, Pozirk. Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin and his Russian counterpart Andrei Belousov have approved the concept of the Belarusian-Russian military exercise Union Shield 2027 during a joint board meeting of the two defense ministries Thursday in Minsk.
Chrenin described the exercise as the main training event for the armed forces of the two countries next year and stressed that it would be “purely defensive,” the Belarusian defense ministry reported. It did not specify in which country it will take place.
Since 2011, the Union Shield has been held every four years in Russia. Belarus hosted the drill only once, in 2006.
According to Chrenin, the meeting confirmed that the defense ministries look eye to eye on military cooperation and aim to fulfill “practical tasks” to ensure the Union State’s military security.
Belousov was quoted as saying that Russian and Belarus would continue to improve the training of their armed forces to reflect lessons learned from Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Since 2011, the Union Shield exercise has been held every four years in Russia. Belarus hosted the drill only once, in 2006.
