EU takes note of recent release of Belarus’ prisoners

June 8, Pozirk. The European Union “takes note” of the recent release of some Belarusian political prisoners, said Anitta Hipper, the European Commission’s lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy.
“We continue to call on the Łukašenka regime to free all those arbitrarily detained, especially people in life-threatening conditions. Ongoing arrests, repression and human rights violations must stop,” she tweeted last night.
On July 2, Alaksandar Łukašenka’s office reported that he pardoned 16 prisoners, branded by the government as extremists.
On May 8, a day after Łukašenka announced a pardon for 42 opponents, the European Commission also called for the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Belarus.
The EU said it took note of the announcement.
