Cichanoŭskaja cites staff shortage as security services step up pressure
August 9, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja says her team is struggling to fill vacancies as security services intensify pressure on anyone working with her.
“People may be willing to do the job, but they face criminal cases, harassment of relatives and constant threats,” Cichanoŭskaja told Pozirk in Warsaw during events marking the fifth anniversary of Belarus’ disputed presidential election. “I have great respect for everyone who works under such circumstances.”
She said Alisa Ryžyčenka will soon join her office in Vilnius as economic representative, a post vacant for a long time. Ryžyčenka will be tasked with securing funding for media and cultural projects and preparing for economic recovery after a change of government.
A post for a representative on restoring law and order remains open after Alaksandar Azaraŭ lost a vote of no confidence from the Coordination Council. “I have reminded the Council that I am waiting for its proposals,” Cichanoŭskaja said.
