Cichanoŭskaja ahead of talks in Washington: Belarus’ future is at stake
August 18, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja has pledged support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders ahead of their meeting with US President Donald Trump, who wants to press Ukraine to accept a quick peace deal.
“Peace must be just and lasting – Russia must be contained. Any talks must also recognize that Belarus’ future is at stake,” she said on X.
High-level talks featuring Trump and Zelensky are expected to take place later today in Washington. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are expected to join them.
Trump’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska three days ago ended without a ceasefire deal.
In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine in which the Belarusian authorities supported the Kremlin, allowing Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions and supplying arms to Moscow.
