Łukašenka congratulates Myanmar’s coup leader voted president by pro-military parliament
April 3, Pozirk. Alaksandar Łukašenka has “on behalf of compatriots and his personal behalf” congratulated General Min Aung Hlaing on his election as president of Myanmar, reported the press office of the Belarusian ruler.
In his message, Łukašenka expresses confidence that “extensive experience as a statesman and professional and personal qualities” will allow Min Aung Hlaing to “successfully govern Myanmar and ensure stability and the country’s social and economic development.”
Łukašenka plays up bilateral contacts and agreements signed in 2025, which have “opened up prospects for expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in the political, trade, economic, humanitarian and other areas.”
Łukašenka stresses that Belarus is committed to the implementation of the existing deals to strengthen ties with Myanmar and says that he is looking forward to new meetings to discuss “priority issues on the agenda.”
On April 3, the parliament of Myanmar chose Min Aung Hlaing to be the next president, formalising his grip on political power five years after he ousted a democratically elected government. Nearly 90 percent of the lawmakers owe their loyalty to the military, either as serving officers or members of the army-backed USDP.
Myanmar’s parliamentary elections, held in December and January, have been widely dismissed by Western governments as a sham designed to formalize military rule behind a veneer of democracy. A delegation of Belarus’ central election commission observed the final phase of the elections at the end of January.
Alaksandar Łukašenka visited Myanmar in late November 2025.
Belarusian officials have sought to expand ties with Myanmar lately. The country has been under military rule after a coup in early 2021, followed by a civil war that has claimed thousands of lives.
