Belarusians raise over €6,800 for exiled writer Kurs’ funeral in less than a day

July 23, Pozirk. A fundraiser launched yesterday by the family of Belarusian writer Sviatłana Kurs (Jeva Viežnaviec), who died in Warsaw three days ago after battling cancer, has raised more than €6,800 needed to cover funeral expenses and repatriate her body, the BySol Solidarity Fund said.
A public farewell ceremony will be held in Warsaw. The time and venue will be announced at a later date.
The family took out a loan to cover the costs, and the fundraiser was launched to repay it.
Kurs had moved to Poland twenty years ago. In 2021, she won the prestigious Jerzy Giedroyc Literary Award for her novel Pa Što Idzeš, Voŭča (What Now, Mr Wolf?).
In May 2025, the writer was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. BySol appealed for public donations for her treatment, initially seeking €10,000 but ultimately raising nearly twice that amount.
In March 2026, Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja presented Kurs with the United Transitional Cabinet’s medal for her contribution to Belarusian culture.
