August 1, Pozirk. Latvia has closed the last operating checkpoint at the border with Belarus citing “technical reasons.”
Latvian media reported computer systems failure at the Patarnieki-Hryhoraŭščyna checkpoint, citing Kristine Petersone, a spokeswoman for the State Border Guard.
Notably, Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava made the announcement on X next to his post earlier the same day: “Shocking to see the left-wing Spanish government’s inability to stop the mass influx of immigrants into the European Union.”
Latvia has been grappling with irregular migration via Belarus this year, registering 2,119 crossing attempts in the four weeks of July and nearly 9,000 since the start of the year.
