Bialacki on late Milinkievič: his perceived weakness was a source of moral strength
August 13. Pozirk. Politician Alaksandar Milinkievič, who passed away on August 11, always sought consensus, which the authorities mistakenly perceived as weakness, but “his moral strength lay in that apparent weakness,” Nobel Prize laureate Aleś Bialacki said on Facebook.
Bialiatski added that he had known the late politician since the 1990s. “He was an intellectual, which is unusual in today’s official Belarusian political landscape,” he noted.
“Non-confrontational, unlike his longtime opponent, firm in his pro-European convictions and consistent in his support for the Belarusian language and culture. He was a reliable friend and like-minded colleague. He was too good for these harsh times.”
Veteran opposition politician Zianon Paźniak said Milinkievič “embodied Belarusian patriotism,” acting as “an advocate of soft power, gradualism and compromise.”
