UN Human Rights Council to hold interactive dialogue on Belarus on 18 September

August 25, Pozirk. An interactive dialogue with the UN Human Rights Council’s Group of Independent Experts on the Situation of Human Rights in Belarus is scheduled for 18 September, according to the draft program of work for the Council’s 63rd session, which will take place between September 7 and October 7 in Geneva.
In a resolution adopted in March 2026, the Human Rights Council decided to extend the mandate of the Group of Independent Experts for a further period of one year and requested the Group to give an oral update to the Council at its sixty-third session, to be followed by an interactive dialogue, says the agenda of the Council’s upcoming session. The Council will hear the oral update of the Group of Independent Experts during an interactive dialogue.
The Group of Independent Experts was established by the Human Rights in on April 2024 to investigate and establish the facts, circumstances and root causes of all alleged human rights violations committed in Belarus since May 1 2020, including their gender and age dimensions and their impact on victims.
The group consists of Susan Bazilli of Canada, director of the International Women’s Rights Project; Monika Stanisława Płatek of Poland, a professor of criminology at the University of Warsaw; and Karinna Moskalenko of Russia, a human rights lawyer who chairs the group.
In March 2026, during the Council’s 61st session, the group’s mandate was extended by another year with a view to supporting accountability efforts and addressing impunity for human rights violations in Belarus. The Council requested the experts to give an oral update at the 63rd session and a comprehensive report at the 64th session in 2027.
The Council also heard the most recent report to date, authored by UN Special Rapporteur Nils Muižnieks. In the document, which covers the human rights situation in Belarus from April 2025 to March 2026, Muižnieks reiterates his call on Minsk to end politically motivated persecution in the country and ensure implementation of all previous UN recommendations.
