Łukašenka: Russia needs Belarusian microchips

August 29, Pozirk. Belarus and Russia are expanding cooperation beyond traditional areas into high technologies, including microelectronics, building on Belarus’ Soviet-era expertise, Russian President Vladimir Putin has told Alaksandar Łukašenka at their meeting in Novo-Ogaryovo, Putin’s residence near Moscow.

The Belarusian leader said trade between Belarus and Russia “has been growing, at least 12 percent, though we still need to crunch the numbers.” He also said he expected the countries to “significantly exceed” their 2025 bilateral trade by the end of 2026. “It’s gratifying that modern electronics account for a large share of this trade,” he added.

Kyiv has repeatedly pointed out that Russia uses weapons containing electronic components manufactured in Belarus to strike Ukraine.

In February 2022, Belarusian authorities supported Russia after it started a full-scale war against Ukraine, allowing Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions and supplying arms to Moscow.

Official reports showed Putin and Łukašenka praising their bilateral relationship. “You can rest assured that we will work together to overcome any difficulties,” Łukašenka assured Putin.

Putin said his relationship with Łukašenka meant that “new issues keep arising all the time that require attention, coordination and resolution.”
