Belarus’ prosecutor general discusses extradition of “criminals” with Georgian ambassador

September 2, Pozirk. Belarus’ Prosecutor General Dźmitryj Hara met with Georgian Ambassador Giorgi Saganelidze in Minsk on Wednesday to discuss the extradition of criminals, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Hara and Saganelidze discussed cooperation “in the area of criminal law,” with Hara informing the ambassador “about the state of Belarusian‑Georgian cooperation in providing mutual legal assistance in criminal cases, handing over criminal cases for prosecution as well as extraditing persons who have committed crimes,” the agency reported.
They agreed “to strengthen cooperation in every possible way for the sake of protecting the rights and legitimate interests of citizens of both states.”
Alaksandar Łukašenka’s regime had stepped up its attempts to use Interpol for the persecution of its opponents, with new arrests occurring almost every week, said Leanid Marozaŭ, an aide to Belarusian pro-democracy leader Sviatłana Cichanoŭskaja, at the New Belarus Conference in Warsaw on August 9.
According to Marozaŭ, the regime is hunting for its opponents abroad and fabricating cases against them to make their extradition requests appear unrelated to politics. “Literally the latest case was in Argentina,” he said. “[Another one was] in very safe Italy. Not to mention Georgia.”
Georgia, a visa-free country for Belarusians, is home to about 12,000 citizens of Belarus, many of whom fled their country for fear of politically motivated persecution after the 2020 presidential election, but their number keeps shrinking. Georgia has not granted asylum to a single Belarusian under the Georgian Dream government of pro-Russian oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili over the past seven years.
Instead, Georgian authorities have been expelling Belarusians on a regular basis as part of their anti-immigration campaign, with eight expulsions in January-March 2026 alone, compared with six in 2025 and only three between 2019 and 2024.
