Belarus’ economic growth slows to 1.9 percent in January-August

September 17, Pozirk. Belarus’ gross domestic product (GDP) grew 1.9 percent in the first eight months of 2026 after a 2.1-percent increase posted in January-July, the National Statistics Committee (Biełstat) reported.
GDP shrank by 1.2 percent in January, remained down 1.2 percent in the first two months and was 0.4 percent lower in the first quarter. Over the past five months, Belarus’ economy posted growth, with 0.2 percent in January-April, 0.9 percent in January-May and 1.5 percent in the first half of 2026.
Last year, Belarus’ economy grew by 1.3 percent, well below the government’s target of 4.1 percent.
The government expects GDP to grow by 2.8 percent this year.
The International Monetary Fund forecasts Belarus’ economy to grow by 1.4 percent in 2026, while the Eurasian Development Bank projects growth of 1.5 percent. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development recently lowered its 2026 growth forecast for Belarus to 1.3 percent.
