Opposition leader outlines Belarus’ European aspirations to Irish PM

October 28, Pozirk. Belarusian opposition leader Śviatłana Cichanoŭskaja met Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin yesterday to discuss Belarus’ European prospects, regional security and jailed dissidents, her press office reports.
Belarusians should hear a clear message from European Union leaders that Belarus is part of Europe and that its future lies within the European family, the politician argued. Cichanoŭskaja also stressed the need to secure the release of regime critics in Belarus and assist reprisal victims, while maintaining coordinated international pressure on Minsk to ensure “real systemic changes.”
The talks also covered ongoing reprisals and Alaksandar Łukašenka regime’s involvement in Russia’s war on Ukraine. The parties reportedly stressed the need to coordinate Belarusian pro-democracy forces’ efforts with Kyiv and ensure that Belarus features in future peace negotiations.
Cichanoŭskaja thanked Ireland and the Irish people for solidarity with the Belarusian cause, support for the International Humanitarian Fund assisting reprisal victims and keeping Belarus on the EU Council’s agenda during Ireland’s presidency.
