Rubel sinks 20 percent against dollar, second-worst in former Soviet Union

September 30, Pozirk. The Belarusian currency plunged 20.12 percent against the US dollar in the first nine months of 2023, outpacing the declines of most currencies in the former Soviet Union, according to data from central banks.

Only the Russian ruble performed worse, dropping 38.5 percent in the same period, while other currencies weakened much slower.

The Uzbekistani sum fell 8.46 percent, the Tajikistani somoni 7.41 percent, the Kyrgyz som 3.54 percent and the Kazakhstani tenge 2.55 percent. The euro, which is used by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, slipped 0.67 percent.

The official exchange rates remained unchanged in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Ukraine.

The Armenian dram climbed 0.04 percent against the dollar, while the Moldovan leu hiked 5.23 percent.

The Belarusian rubel fell 2.29 percent against the dollar in September alone.
